(1) The delivery of cancer care services in the Kimberley continues to be a priority for the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) - Kimberley. WACHS - Kimberley acknowledges that the delivery of cancer care services offers many challenges due to the geographical area and diversity of cancer patients.
Patients have access to screening and diagnostic procedures within the region, except for complex radiological assessment for which patients are referred to tertiary services in the metropolitan area.
The region has one resident general surgeon and a visiting surgeon, who both undertake some surgery for cancer treatment and management.
Patients requiring tertiary multidisciplinary care are referred to one of the major hospitals in Perth for all cancer treatment. A small range of low risk chemotherapy regimes are administered in the Kimberley.
WACHS - Kimberley have dedicated cancer care positions to provide cancer care services to the Kimberley. They are a Rural Cancer Care Coordinator and a regional Palliative Care Coordinator.
(2) The Kimberley Palliative Care Service provides support, education, resources, bereavement, and debriefing across the Kimberley to Primary Health Care Providers, including hospitals, aged care facilities, remote communities, Aboriginal Health Services and the private GP clinics as well as patients, their families and friends. This service works in conjunction with other local and regional services to ensure palliative care to patients regardless of location, illness, age, and/or cultural background.
During 2010, the following Palliative Care positions were created and recruitment has progressed as follows:
- Senior Social Worker Palliative Care - Advertising has closed on 4 October 2010 and the recruitment process is in train. This position is expected to be appointed to by November 2010.
- Clinical Nurse Palliative Care - Advertising has closed and applicants have been interviewed. This is position is expected to be appointed to by the end of the month.
- Administrative Assistant, Palliative Care - to be advertised within the next month.
- Aboriginal Health Worker, Palliative Care - advertising closed and applicants have recently been interviewed. This position is expected to be appointed to by the end of the month.
