GOOSEBERRY HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL —
CONTAMINATED SOIL
581. Hon SUE ELLERY to the Minister for Education:
I refer to asbestos contamination in
the soil at Gooseberry Hill Primary School.
(1) Have any soil
samples been taken at the school; and, if so, when?
(2) If yes, where
were they taken from and what were the results of those samples?
(3) Have any
barriers been put around the contaminated area to stop children accessing the
contaminated areas or signs erected notifying staff and parents of the presence
of asbestos?
(4) Can the
minister confirm that Mr Andrew Hastie attended a meeting of the school
community and agreed at that meeting to allow Ms Toni Warden to arrange for
consultants to conduct soil sample tests; and, if not, what is Mr Hastie's
recollection of the commitments he gave at that meeting?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) Yes. Six samples
were taken for testing on Saturday, 18 June 2016.
(2) The samples
were taken from around and below the oval, which is the area under assessment
by Greencap, an independent environmental consultant. The formal results are
yet to be provided; however, verbal advice is that all the samples have been
tested and no asbestos fibres have been detected.
(3) Yes. The
school has erected a barrier using ''Caution Asbestos'' tape
provided by Greencap to restrict access to the area under assessment. However,
advice from the school is that this was broken after hours by persons unknown.
A more permanent barrier is being erected as a priority by the Department of
Finance–Building Management and Works.
(4) Mr Hastie
attended a meeting at the school on Tuesday, 14 June 2016, and it is confirmed
that he advised that soil samples could be taken.
