GRAYLANDS
HOSPITAL — RESTRUCTURE
760. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the
Minister for Mental Health:
(1) Will the
minister confirm that staff at Graylands Hospital were advised of a clinical
restructure in recent days?
(2) Will the restructure involve any cuts to staff?
(3) If yes to (2), how many jobs will be cut at Graylands?
(4) Will any of the jobs be moved elsewhere?
(5) Will the
minister confirm that staff have been told that wards at Graylands Hospital
will be closed; and, if so, how many?

I thank the member for some notice of the question.
(1) Staff at
Graylands Hospital have been advised of the plan for reconfiguration of beds at
Graylands Hospital following the accreditation visit by the Australian Council
on Healthcare Standards, which resulted in beds in Fortescue House, Hutchison
ward, being no longer available for acute inpatient care. Accordingly,
Hutchison ward's current use is for sub-acute inpatient care.
It is expected that the bed
reconfiguration plan referred to above will ultimately result in replacement of
inpatient beds in Fortescue House with alternative care options such as
hospital in the home services and other hospital or community-based facilities.
The bed reconfiguration will address availability of acute beds on the
Graylands campus following the ACHS survey. When it is assessed as appropriate
for an individual to be supported through a hospital in the home program, they
will be provided this service. Hospital in the home programs can provide
significant benefits to people requiring treatment and support for their mental
illness, such as faster recovery and the maintenance of connections with
family, friends and their community. It is therefore an approach to providing modern
mental health care that I am driving forward as part of overall mental health
reform in the state.
(2) No.
(3)–(4) Not applicable.
(5) Please refer to the response to (1).
