PLAN FOR JOBS —
TREASURY FORECASTS
154. Dr M.D. NAHAN to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question.
Given the Treasurer also advised the Legislative Council that the current rate
of employment growth is only 1.3 per cent —
Mr B.S. Wyatt interjected.
The SPEAKER : Treasurer!
Dr M.D. NAHAN : —and
almost 100 000 Western Australians are without a job, will the Premier now
swallow his pride and admit even his current job plan is a failure?
Mr B.S. Wyatt interjected.
The SPEAKER : Treasurer, I call
you to order for the first time.

The answer is clearly no, but I will
elucidate a little more. When we announced the jobs target the other week, the
opposition said it was completely unobtainable. In the Leader of the Opposition's
supplementary question he indicated it is unobtainable, whereas in his initial
question he said that it was too low. I do not trust anything or any analysis
he comes up with, because he walks both sides of the fence all the time. This
government has come up with an aspirational target for jobs in Western Australia.
That is a good thing.
Mr D.C. Nalder interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Bateman!
Mr M. McGOWAN : We want to
create jobs. We want to send a message to the Western Australian business
community, to the world, that we want to create jobs for Western Australia.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members on my
left.
Mr M. McGOWAN : We want to
solve a range of the problems in Western Australia and all we cop from the
Liberals is this ongoing negativity about the government setting priorities for
the state, whether it is the study of science, technology, engineering and
mathematics or greater housing density around Metronet.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members, I want
to hear the answer.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Whether it is
Aboriginal incarceration, waste, conservation or the achievement of young
people in school.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr M. McGOWAN : Whether it is
improving the outcomes of kids across a range of developmental indexes or
creating budget surpluses. We are setting targets; we are aspirational.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.

Opposition!

negative.
