The Western Australian Institute of Sport supports athletes travel costs to specific national and international sporting events. Athletes supported in 2005/06 to such events include tertiary (189), and secondary and primary (113) school students. (a) The optimum process to allocate funds efficiently and accountably to assist with interstate travel is to provide funds via the SSAs. Assessment of funding requests from individuals would be extremely difficult as there are a number of student competitions held each year, each with varying selection criteria and selection processes. The SSAs are usually affiliated with National Sports Organisations, ensuring consistent selection methods that link with their talent identification systems. (2) No. (a) See response to (1)(a). (3) Individuals may be eligible to apply for funding from their relevant State Sporting Association, National Sporting Organisations (for national team representation), Local Government Authorities and local community groups such as Lions, Rotary and local business associations.
