PERTH FREIGHT LINK — SIGNAGE REMOVAL
570. Ms S.F. McGURK to the Minister for Transport:
(1) Did the
minister authorise, or was he aware, that Main Roads was involved in the
removal of signs protesting against the Perth Freight Link?
(2) Did he know
that signs were removed from properties, sometimes at night, including from
walls of the homes of Palmyra residents—the same homes that he is
threatening to bulldoze?
(3) Will he
condemn this jackboot suppression of community democracy, apologise to
residents and order the immediate return of their signs?

(1)–(3) I
became aware of this issue only last night, and I was asked questions this
morning upon entering Parliament about whether I was aware of or had been
involved in this matter at all; so, no, my office has had nothing do with it.
Something similar occurred to me during the election campaign when corflutes were suddenly removed. Councils and Main Roads
are involved in the removal of illegal signage, so from an operating
perspective I do not engage with the Department of Transport as to what it is
doing as far as removing signs. When it comes to ripping a sign off someoneXXX ###XXXs wall, if it is a government department
that is doing that, I think that is taking it too far, so I have put in a question
and am seeking a response from the director general.
