I refer to an article in the North
West Telegraph from 29 January titled ''Pre-teen car theft spree
leaves Newman at breaking point''.
(1) How many vehicles have been stolen each month in
Newman from November 2019 through to January 2020?
(2) Of those thefts, how many were
stolen by juvenile offenders?
(3) What extra police resources, if
any, will be deployed to the Pilbara to prevent crime?
(4) Has the minister lobbied the Minister for
Community Services to consider expanding Target 120 to Newman; and, if
not, why not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following information has been provided to me
by the Minister for Police. The Western Australia Police Force advises as
follows.
(1)–(3) The
number of stealing motor vehicle offences in Newman between November 2019 and
January 2020 was five in November 2019, 17 in December 2019 and 24 in January
2020. The number of juvenile offenders
processed for stealing motor vehicle offences that occurred from November 2019
to January 2020 was six in November 2019, 22 in December 2019 and seven
in January 2020. Police monitor resources throughout the state and deploy as
operationally required.
(4) The Minister
for Police will continue to discuss Target 120 on a regular basis with the
Minister for Community Services.
There is a note here that says statistics
are provisional and subject to revision. ''Juvenile'' has been
defined as aged between 10 and 17 years of age, inclusive, at the time the
offence occurred. Figures for juvenile offenders are not distinct and may be
counted multiple times if they have committed multiple offences.
