❓ A parliamentary question regarding the allocation of $1 million in the budget for the relocation of the Busselton TAFE college. The minister's response defends the government's decision to build a new middle school instead, stating it's in the best interest of the region.

I refer the minister to his media statement of 10 August announcing a new education plan for Busselton and his decision to leave the Busselton College of TAFE on its current site and to build a new middle school at Vasse. (1) Is the minister aware that this year’s budget contains the provision of $1 million for the purchase of land at Vasse in order to relocate the existing TAFE college away from its small and inadequate site? (2) Why is it that the TAFE college is being left where it is and not moved to a much large site at Vasse? (3) What will the $1 million in the budget now be used for, recognising that this sum will buy only three or four of the existing houses adjoining the TAFE site, thereby adding only 4 000 square metres to the amount of land available to the TAFE college? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

(1)-(3) I thank the member for Vasse for his question and, as I have reflected on before, his interest in education. The member has pursued a different option from the one adopted by the Government. In fact, I think he pursued whatever option happened to be popular in whatever household he was nearest in that area. The Government has produced the best option in education and training for the Vasse, Busselton and Bunbury region. We did not succumb to those in political pressure groups who were understandably agitating to have high schools located near their neighbourhoods based on the numbers they produced. We went for the best option; namely, to provide a new middle school at Vasse, and to have the current Busselton Senior High School converted to a senior college with a relationship with the adjacent TAFE. The $1 million allocation in the budget will now be applied where it is needed most. In conversation, I have already given that answer to the member for Vasse. I understand why he wants to pursue issues when pressure groups come up from the left or right or from different parts of the electorate. However, in the end, a decision must be made that is best for everyone. This decision is the best for everyone. The member for Vasse might understand that there is no political mileage in decisions of this nature in that electorate for us - it is not a Labor electorate. The decision was made purely on the basis of the best interests of the region.
