The Minister for Environment's Appeal Determination on Appeals Numbers 015, 016 and 017 of 2007 makes the following reference to the Department of Fisheries "
The management and monitoring of whitebait stocks in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is the responsibility of the Department of Fisheries and, with the exception of three existing commercial fishing licences, fishing will be prohibited in the proposed boating exclusion zone
."
This remains the situation.
The statement does not specify that the Department of Fisheries is responsible for monitoring or management of impacts associated with the proposed boat launching facility. The Department will continue to manage the West Coast Beach Bait Managed Fishery, which includes the metropolitan fishery for whitebait. The Port Kennedy area is a component of this fishery. However the Department is not conducting a specifically designed monitoring program for the boat launching facility when it is constructed at Port Kennedy.
(1) The Department does not have plans to undertake a specifically designed monitoring program to assess the impact of a boat launching facility if one is constructed at Port Kennedy but will continue to monitor white bait stocks across the West Coast of WA.
