ANIMAL ACTIVISM — LEGISLATION
993. Mr P.J. RUNDLE to the Attorney General:
I
refer to the Attorney General's commitment on 10 April this year to
bring animal activist–farm trespass legislation before cabinet
within two to three weeks.
(1) Given that it
is now over six months since the Attorney General made that commitment, where
is the legislation?
(2) Amid the
threat of swine fever to our pork industry, serial pest James Warden yesterday
pleading guilty to trespass and stealing a piglet, and protesters at the gates
of Linley Valley Pork today, what measures has the Attorney General taken to
ensure that our pork farmers are protected from severe biosecurity risks caused
by invading criminal activists?
Mr R.S. Love : Not much, is
the short answer.
Mr D.J. Kelly : Eight years
and you did nothing.

(1)–(2) Eight years and you
did nothing.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members! I want
to hear who is going to talk next.
Mr J.R. QUIGLEY : In eight
years, they did zip. This morning I sat down with draft 9H of the bill. It has
become a little more complicated since the 7.30 report on the knackery
and the cruelty to horses. In draft 9H, we are tricking up the bill to include
rights of inspection on properties that have knackeries, abattoirs and the
like. Although we will supress trespassers
who go onto these properties under the misguided belief that they need to
expose things, we will also enhance lawful inspection. That has come to
the fore more recently since the 7.30 report on the shocking cruelty to
those horses. I am looking at that matter. We have not landed on the position
yet; we are examining that. We will continue to examine that proposition.
