(1) How many Aboriginal people belong to the Miriuwung-Gajerrong group? (2) What is the estimated total size of the area covered by the Miriuwung-Gajerrong group’s native title claim? (3) What is the size of the area covered by the agreement? (4) Does the government anticipate that there will be further agreements with the same group over land under native title or native title claims not included in this agreement? (5) Will the parliamentary secretary representing the Deputy Premier table the agreement; and, if not, why not? Hon KATE DOUST

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Unknown. The indigenous population of the two shires of the East Kimberley is estimated at 5 249. (2) The Miriuwung-Gajerrong No 4 application covers an area of approximately 6 758 square kilometres. The Miriuwung-Gajerrong people hold native title over an area of approximately 7 855 square kilometres as a result of a consent determination of native title in Miriuwung-Gajerrong No 1. This represents a total area of 14 613 square kilometres, which is the area covered by the Ord final agreement. (3) The Ord final agreement covers an area of 14 613 square kilometres. (4) Yes. Consistent with government policy to resolve native title matters by agreement, the state has entered mediation with a view to agreeing to a consent determination of native title in relation to the No 4 application. (5) Yes. The Ord final agreement will be tabled once a variation - required for the agreement to meet technical requirements for registration as an indigenous land-use agreement - has been executed.
