LOGUE BROOK DAM — WATERSKIING
Given that Logue Brook Dam is now open for recreational use, can the minister please advise the house when waterskiing activities can resume? Dr G.G. JACOBS

I thank the member for Murray-Wellington for his enthusiastic representation of the people in his electorate over the issue of the opening of Logue Brook Dam. The process behind the decision to close Logue Brook Dam by the previous government commenced in 2006. The current government made a commitment to open Logue Brook Dam, and did so in nine weeks upon coming to government. The processes involved a cabinet submission and cabinet approval, then a taking of that submission to Exco for the Governor to sign off to open the dam. The waterskiing ban is yet to be lifted but it should be lifted by early next week. At this stage the lake is not open to the public due to the fact that the waterskiing ban is yet to be lifted. We have some concerns about safety. The Department of Transport and Hon Simon O’Brien understand the process, and the process to lift the ban is underway, after buoys and the appropriate signage are erected. Opposition members interjected. The SPEAKER : Members on my left may think that they have a range of answers to the question that has been asked, and possibly some of them do, but I would appreciate being able to hear the minister’s response. I am sure the person who asked the question, the member sitting next to the minister, would also appreciate that opportunity. Dr G.G. JACOBS : The government’s intention is to protect all lake users as required as appropriate lake levels are assessed and safety buoys are in place on the lake. The opposition may make light of that, but we have a responsibility as a responsible government. Logue Brook Dam is open. An official function will be held on 13 December to formally open the dam. The Premier will be there to officially open the dam. It is likely to be a very significant day. Opposition members interjected. Dr G.G. JACOBS : Members opposite may make light of this. The dam has the potential to be used by 30 000 recreational users. It is a great pleasure to respond to the cries of the community and young people to make use of this lake for recreational use.
