EMERGENCY
SERVICES — APPLIANCES
634. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the Minister for Emergency Services:
I refer to the delivery of new fire
appliances to volunteer fire and emergency services groups.
(1) What are the
protocols when brigades, groups or units receive new appliances and how are
these communicated?
(2) Does the
minister's office or the Department of Fire and Emergency Services
advise volunteer BGUs they are not permitted to publicise or photograph new
appliances until they are officially presented by the minister or his
representative?
(3) Is it correct
that the minister's office or DFES has asked volunteers to travel
outside their primary response districts to transport appliances for the
purpose of media or promotional events?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) When a new
appliance is delivered, DFES staff conduct a handover with local regional
staff, who then provide familiarisation training to the brigade, group or unit.
Each BGU is advised in advance via a DFES regional office to arrange an
appropriate time and date.
(2) The Fire and
Emergency Services Commissioner and I make every effort to personally thank and acknowledge the incredible efforts and
continued service of our emergency services volunteers. The formal handover events requested by DFES—attended by the commissioner, media,
community members and me—facilitate the appropriate level of
recognition and appreciation for emergency services volunteers.
(3) DFES takes a commonsense
approach in offering a single event for volunteers from different BGUs to come
together on occasions when multiple appliances are being presented regionally.
This offers local volunteers the opportunity
to celebrate together, along with being able to strengthen established
relationships with other BGUs that they may respond with and support at
incidents.
