ORD STAGE 2 - GOVERNMENT COMMITMENT, AND COMPENSATION
Had the minister spoken to the commonwealth prior to extending the expressions of interest process? Mr E.S. RIPPER
Had the minister spoken to the commonwealth prior to extending the expressions of interest process? Mr E.S. RIPPER
AnswerView source ↗
I have had three meetings in which the Ord has been discussed, two of which have been with Minister Malcolm Turnbull, and one was with Bill Heffernan. I have had the discussions about the prospects of commonwealth involvement, and I am making a judgement about what is in the interests of Western Australians. I want Ord stage 2 to succeed. I want it to be profitable and sustainable. The government made a very substantial commitment of $56 million in settling native title to allow Ord stage 2 to proceed. The government spent between $11 million and $12 million on the Ord enhancement scheme. Do members opposite think we would have made those commitments and undertaken all that work if we were not committed to Ord stage 2? Of course we are committed to Ord stage 2, but we are committed to a successful, profitable and sustainable Ord stage 2. We do not want a “sick man of northern agriculture” coming back to us, as they have this year seeking financial assistance from the taxpayers. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : I call to order the members for Avon, Moore and Roe.
