MITCHELL FREEWAY — WIDENING BETWEEN HEPBURN AVENUE AND HODGES DRIVE
(1) Is there a plan to widen the Mitchell Freeway from two lanes to three lanes between Hepburn Avenue and Hodges Drive? (2) If yes to (1), when is this likely to occur, given the present major congestion? (3) How many lanes are planned for the new extension from Hodges Drive to Burns Beach Road? Hon ADELE FARINA

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) Main Roads has long-term plans that accommodate widening the freeway between Hepburn Avenue and Hodges Drive. However, this project is not included in the current works program. (2) The project would need to be considered as part of a future budget development process and would have to compete against many other high priority projects across the state. It should be realised that it is not economically sustainable to continue to widen the freeway to accommodate a relatively short peak traffic period. Commuters are encouraged to consider alternative modes of travel such as public transport. (3) The extension of the freeway from Hodges Drive to Burns Beach Road is under construction with two freeway standard lanes in each direction.
