KIDNEY DONORS
Will the minister advise the house of government initiatives to assist kidney donors? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

I thank the member for Maylands for her question. In Australia - indeed, it is a world first - the state government and Kidney Health Australia are providing accommodation for kidney donors and their families. I was delighted recently to open two homes in Morley that we have built for kidney donors and their families. I did so in the company of the member for Maylands, as they are in her electorate, and the member for Southern River, who every member of this house knows has a very special interest in this area. This accommodation is known as the FAITH project, which is an acronym for Family Accommodation Initiative Transplant Housing. The state government is very proud to be part of this initiative. We have invested some $787 000 to help donors and their families, money that will help many donors for many years to come. The two new homes have been set up to allow regional and rural Western Australia families to arrive in Perth with nothing more than a suitcase. The homes are equipped with absolutely everything they could need, from furnishings through to crockery, cutlery and electronic equipment. Donors and their families will be able to stay in these large, quality homes for as long as they need to. These homes will go a long way towards alleviating some of the financial and emotional stress that donors and their families go through. People who choose to donate a kidney, whether it be for a family member or someone else, are very special people who make a big sacrifice not only for the recipients but also for the community. I am therefore delighted to say that these recently completed FAITH homes have already assisted two families from regional Western Australia and that they have commanded the attention of similar agencies in other states of Australia. By supporting these families, we are reducing the number of people on the waiting list and the number of people on dialysis. It is an outstanding example of the Carpenter government’s initiatives to support a very generous group of Western Australians. It is a great initiative and I congratulate all those involved with Kidney Health Australia for working with us on the initiative.
