Regarding the teaching of English as a second language to migrant children in the Kindergarten and Pre-primary classes in public schools in Western Australia, I ask -
(1) Is the Minister concerned about the lack of English as a second language tuition in Western Australian non compulsory school age children?
(2) If yes to (1), how is the Minister addressing this concern?

(1)  - (3) The Department of Education and Training has an ongoing commitment to provide a high level of support for young English as a Second Language (ESL) children. Kindergarten and Pre-primary classes in Western Australian public schools are inclusive and incorporate explicit teaching in a play-based learning environment that caters to the needs of individual children. This includes a specific focus on teaching Standard Australian English and numeracy skill development.
Kindergarten and Pre-primary teachers acknowledge and use ESL children's prior learning experiences, knowledge and interests to design and deliver developmentally appropriate teaching programs.
The Department's English as a Second Language (ESL) Visiting Teachers provide direct support, resources, professional development and coordinate meetings with culturally and linguistically diverse parents (CaLD) in Kindergarten and Pre-primary centres. They facilitate enrolments into Intensive English Centres for Year one, should the student require ongoing ESL support. They also actively engage other government and non?government agencies to support CaLD families and schools.
The ESL/ESD Resource Centre, based at Mt Claremont Primary School, provides an extensive range of ESL resources to support teachers of ESL Kindergarten and Pre-primary children.
Two Integrated Services Centres, located at the Intensive English Centres at Koondoola and Parkwood Primary Schools, provide support to newly arrived humanitarian entrants and actively assist children in the Kindergarten and Pre-primary age group. This support includes the provision of trauma counselling and health services to students and all members of their family.
