Given the serious situation of the dams supplying the metropolitan area, Kalgoorlie and the wheatbelt being at their lowest levels for over 35 years - (1) Will the minister immediately introduce a ban on the use of all sprinklers other than on two days a week? (2) Will the minister ensure that compliance is met when this occurs? (3) Will the minister immediately set target levels of weekly use and introduce an educational program on how to maximise the maintenance of lawns and gardens with minimum watering? (4) Will the minister guarantee that water needed for stock remains a priority by ensuring supplies are available from the scheme water networks? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS

(1)-(4) I am pleased that Hon Bruce Donaldson has raised this issue.  He may recall that a few weeks ago I provided the House with a statement on the position of water supplies and at that time foreshadowed that water restrictions might well be necessary.  That position was re-emphasised by me yesterday and by my colleague Hon Dr Judy Edwards in the other place in answer to a question.  As a Government, we are very conscious of the need to make sure that those in Western Australia who are short of water have appropriate water supplies.  The matter is under active consideration.  I can assure the member that this matter is being pursued appropriately, and at the appropriate time the appropriate announcement will be made. I am very concerned about the last part of the member’s question, and the member would be aware that I have communicated with a number of his constituents on this issue.  My responsibility in this area is in my capacity as Minister for Government Enterprises.  One of the agencies that I have ministerial responsibility for in that regard is the Water Corporation.  The Water Corporation is working closely with other agencies of government to ensure that what can be done is done appropriately and at the appropriate time.  The other relevant agencies are the Water and Rivers Commission and the Department of Agriculture, which is the lead agency in this regard.
