ASCOT KILNS — RESTORATIONS
35. Hon SAMANTHA ROWE to the
minister representing the Minister for Planning:
I refer to an article in the Southern Gazette on Tuesday, 27 January 2015 regarding the Ascot
kilns coming under the full control of the Western Australian Planning
Commission.
(1) Will the

(2) When can
the Ascot community expect to see the kilns restored, if at all?
(3) Has the
minister held discussions with parties interested in the restoration?
(4) If yes to
(3), with which parties have discussions been held?

I thank the member for some notice of this question.
The member for Belmont, Mrs Glenys
Godfrey, has worked on this project for a considerable amount of time and it
would be useful if the member opposite teamed up with her because she has
certainly got the running on this. It might well be a good thing for the member
opposite to work with her and get some bipartisan support on this issue; that
would be really good. It is really good that the member opposite has raised the
issue to support it.
Several opposition members interjected.
THE PRESIDENT : Order, members! Let us hear the answer.
Hon HELEN MORTON : I
will make sure that Mrs Glenys Godfrey gets the information as well.
(1) The Ascot
kilns have been placed on the interim register of the state Register of
Heritage Places, place 868. The site is also protected within the provisions of
the City of Belmont town planning scheme. The future restoration of all or part
of the kilns' assemblage and their appropriate interpretation will be
determined in the future in consultation with the Heritage Council of Western
Australia and the City of Belmont as part of a proposed planning study for the
area.
(2) Restoration
will depend upon the completion of an urban design study and financial
feasibility proposed to be undertaken by the Western Australian Planning
Commission, which will involve public consultation.
(3) No.
(4) Not
applicable.
