SOUTHERN
METROPOLITAN REGIONAL COUNCIL — RECYCLING FACILITY
910. Hon SALLY
TALBOT to the minister representing the Minister for Environment:
Noting that in a few days' time the minister is
officiating at the opening of the new recycling facility at the Southern
Metropolitan Regional Council in Canning Vale, my question refers to the
minister's publicly expressed doubt about the long-term viability of
the SMRC's operations at its site in Canning Vale.
(1) How much waste is currently processed each month by the
composting facility at the SMRC?
(2) Is the minister considering
alternatives for the waste currently going to the composting facility?
(3) If so, what alternatives is the
minister considering?
(4) What costs would these
alternatives incur?
(5) Will those costs be borne solely
by the participating councils?
(6) If not, how will the costs be
met?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question.
The minister is not officiating at the opening of the
Southern Metropolitan Regional Council's new recycling facility.
(1) Condition
3 of the SMRC's amended licence issued on 7 May 2012 restricts the
acceptance of putrescible waste to a maximum of 1 365 tonnes a week until 15
December 2012.
(2)–(6) The
SMRC is required by its licence to implement a number of upgrades by 15 December
2012. Any consideration of alternatives is a matter for the SMRC.
