Detention facilities
466. Mr Adam Hort to
the Premier:
I have a
supplementary question. If the Premier is committed to improving the experience
for children in detention, as he has publicly claimed, why would he not tell us
the actual date of the closure of unit 18?

The project
definition plan is still being finalised, and so obviously we will be in a
better place to provide the member with a more solid deadline on that.
Mr Adam Hort: When?
Mr Roger Cook: Well, the Minister for Corrective
Services is working through those issues now. But I must say that since I
became Premier, we have significantly changed the way we provide services at
that facility. It is a different place today than when I took over, and that
was one of the fundamental commitments I made at the time. We have changed the
culture. We have changed the nature of the services. The juveniles at that
facility have more time away from their rooms. They have access to more
education, more therapy and more cultural guidance, particularly through the
elders team that works within that facility. It is a different
place today than what it was before, and we are very proud of that. But it is
true that ultimately we need to develop a facility that is fit for purpose so
that we can get juveniles out of unit 18 and repurpose it for other prisoners
in the department of corrective services and see it continue to advance.
