CARBON EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGET — FEDERAL
LABOR POLICY
351. Dr M.D. NAHAN to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question.
What impact will the Premier and Bill Shorten's carbon emissions target
have on the Scarborough project, the Browse project —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members on my
right! Start again.
Dr M.D. NAHAN : What impact
will the Premier and Bill Shorten's carbon emissions target have on the
Scarborough gas project that the government is relying on, the Browse project
that it is relying on and promoting, the Eliwana mine, the Wagerup refinery
expansion and the Wesfarmers methanol project plant; and can the Premier
confirm that the policy will disproportionately hurt Western Australia's
major employers, especially in the oil and gas business?

The answer to the last part of the
question is no. On the remainder of the question, I just remind the Leader of
the Opposition that in 2010–11 the Liberal and National Parties in
office lost the Browse project. For the Leader of the Opposition to stand up
here —
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition!
Mr
M. McGOWAN : That is what
happened. Does the Leader of the Opposition remember the former government's interference? The Leader of the Opposition does not understand what happened.
Does the Leader of the Opposition remember the former government's
interference? He should go and ask the oil and gas industry what the former
government did. I will tell members opposite what the industry is asking for,
and members opposite can talk to the industry if it will talk to them because,
frankly, I do not really think that the industry likes talking to the Leader of
the Opposition these days.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
Opposition, I have warned you three times. I call you to order for the first
time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : If members
opposite talked to the industry, they would learn that it says that this
country needs a national policy on these issues. When I conducted a round table
there with industry six weeks or so ago and put that to them, it universally
agreed. At least nationally, one side, which is Labor, supports action on
climate change and one side supports a national approach, and that also is
Labor. The Liberal Party is denying history; it is denying the Australian
population opportunities to deal with this issue and denying worldwide accepted
science.
