PREMIER'S BOOK AWARDS — BIENNIAL
50. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS to the Minister for Culture and the Arts:
I have a supplementary question. Why
has the minister cut funding for these awards, which cost such a small amount
of money in the scheme of things, rather than fostering and promoting local
writers and recognising that importance in our community on an annual basis?

I think I have just explained that the state will provide
about $900 000 this financial year and on a continuing basis to support local
writers in Western Australia. A lot more is done in this area than simply
through the book awards.
