POLICE — ASSAULTS
AGAINST
835. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the minister representing the Minister
for Police:
I refer to Mr Leroy Dimer who was
convicted of assaulting a public officer and received an eight-month suspended
sentence following an incident in which he spat at police officers whilst
claiming to be infected with COVID-19.
(1) Has the
minister discussed the matter with the WA Police Force and the WA Police Union
as he publicly committed?
(2) Is the
government considering amendments to provide greater protection to frontline
officers who are assaulted in these circumstances?
(3) How many
charges have occurred under sections 318 and 338B of the Criminal Code in
relation to threats or assaults against police officers since assent day on 3
April 2020?
(4) Of those identified in (3), how
many offenders have been convicted and sentenced?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question. The following answer has been provided to me by
the Minister for Police.
(1)–(4) This
incident is disgusting and there are no circumstances in which it is
appropriate to spit on our police officers.
The government moved quickly to strengthen the Criminal Code in relation to
COVID-19-related assaults and threats. The Western Australia Police
Force advises that the information sought by the honourable member regarding
these reforms cannot be provided in the time available and may not be available
in the breakdown specified by the member. Questions regarding court outcomes
should be directed to the Attorney General.
