There will be a monumental increase in the budget, which the Treasurer will be pleased to know! I ask a supplementary question. Will the minister ensure, in the light of that decision, that the existing Royal Perth Hospital services will be maintained until the move to the Fiona Stanley hospital is effected, and that Swan District Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Armadale-Kelmscott Memorial Hospital, which service the eastern corridor, are upgraded before the move? The SPEAKER : Order! Member, take a seat. I am sure we have heard enough of the question to get the gist of the supplementary. It is not acceptable to ask another question altogether, but I am sure the minister will answer it quickly, because we are running out of time. Mr J.A. McGINTY

The simple answer, which I will elaborate on a little, is yes. We want to make sure that the services at Royal Perth Hospital, including capital works, are constantly upgraded to the extent necessary, in the same way that they are being upgraded at Fremantle Hospital. Extra intensive care beds are being constructed at that hospital, and the day oncology facilities are being upgraded. We are spending a significant amount of money. Last year we opened a magnetic resonance imaging machine at Fremantle Hospital. All those sorts of things will continue to happen at Royal Perth Hospital. Dr K.D. Hames : Will you be upgrading the peripheral hospitals? Mr J.A. McGINTY : Yes. We have also committed - the details will be apparent in the budget, which will be handed down by the Treasurer next week - to the upgrading of Rockingham-Kwinana District Hospital, Armadale-Kelmscott Memorial Hospital, Swan District Hospital and Joondalup Hospital so that at the same time as we are building the Fiona Stanley hospital, we are maintaining the two existing tertiary hospitals and building up the four general hospitals. Hopefully during the process there will be no interruption whatsoever to clinical services; and when it is complete we will have the best health system in the nation.
