PERRY
LAKES REDEVELOPMENT
548. Mr S.K. L'ESTRANGE to the Minister for
Planning:
I note that the minister recently announced the final
opportunity for land sales in the Perry Lakes estate. With that in mind, can
the minister please update the house on this unique development?

I thank the member for Churchlands for the question, which is
about a very significant residential development in the Perry Lakes precinct.
It is a very historic location, of course, with relation to the sporting
history of Western Australia, having been the site of the 1962 British Empire
and Commonwealth Games, as they were then referred to. It is a development that
is being undertaken to provide a substantial amount of increased residential
development in that part of the metropolitan area, but it also very
appropriately reflects the sporting history of Perry Lakes. For example, the
central ring road of the development was the original athletics track at the
stadium and the boardwalks are made from recycled seating. The old stadium
signage, and structural beams from the site's former basketball stadium
have also been incorporated in public art. The street names acknowledge the
sporting heritage of the precinct. LandCorp is undertaking the development in
conjunction with the Town of Cambridge. They are operating in an effective
partnership. It is happening within the context of Directions 2031, which is
the overall planning framework for the Perth metropolitan area and the Peel
region. It recognises that we need an increased proportion of new residential
development through urban consolidation or urban infill projects. This is one
of the significant ones in the metropolitan area. There has been strong
interest in these developments since the first lots were released in 2010. So
far, 134 lots have either been sold or available for sale, including a number
of apartment sites that will obviously have multiple dwellings within their
construction. The most recent release relates to the final 22 residential lots
in the Perry Lakes estate. They will be released by the end of this month. Six
lots ranging from 275 to 336 square metres were open for offers last Saturday,
21 September, and the remaining 16 lots will go on sale next Saturday, 28 September.
It is the last opportunity for people to buy land to develop houses in what is
a very significant precinct not only from a historical point of view, but also
it provides a significant amount of urban consolidation in a very desirable
area.
