I refer the Premier to his claims in Parliament and to the media yesterday to the effect that he did not privatise but had only corporatised SGIO. I further refer the Premier to a media release dated 2 December - Mr E.S. Ripper: A bit sensitive on this issue. Mr C.J. BARNETT: I further refer the Premier to a media release of 2 December 1992, which states - Legislation to enable the sale of the SGIO - Dr G.I. Gallop: That is what I said yesterday. Mr C.J. BARNETT: I repeat - Legislation to enable the sale of the SGIO by public float has been passed by State Parliament. “The SGIO Privatisation Bill 1992 is an historic piece of legislation,” Minister assisting the Treasurer, Geoff Gallop, said today. “It is the first of its kind in Western Australia providing for the sale by public float of a statutory authority,” Dr Gallop said. (1) Has the Premier misled the public of this State? (2) Has he misled this Parliament? (3) Will he correct the public record? (4) Will he apologise to this House? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(4) I said yesterday that the Lawrence Labor Government, in which I was a minister, facilitated the sale of SGIO, which is exactly what it did. Mr C.J. Barnett: You denied you privatised it. Dr G.I. GALLOP: No. I ask the Leader of the Opposition this question. Mr C.J. Barnett: You are not telling the truth. Everybody knows that. Dr G.I. GALLOP: If the Court Government had wished to preserve SGIO in public ownership, it could have, because it was in public ownership - Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order! Members might not like the answer being given but I cannot hear it because of the constant interjections from the Leader of the Opposition, the member for Warren-Blackwood and the Leader of the National Party. Members will listen to the answer. They may not like what is said, but the Premier has the right to say it. Dr G.I. GALLOP: I was absolutely open with the people of Western Australia. The Lawrence Labor Government supported the privatisation of SGIO. It facilitated the process through legislation in the Parliament. However, when it lost power in early 1993, SGIO was in public ownership. Mr C.J. Barnett: It was the privatisation Bill 1992. You boasted about it in your press release. Tell the truth for a change, Premier. Give truth a chance in Western Australia. Dr G.I. GALLOP: The Leader of the Opposition is now misleading the people of Western Australia. The Leader of the Opposition is very touchy on privatisation. Mr C.J. Barnett: No I am not. I just want the truth. Dr G.I. GALLOP: No, he does not. The truth is that the Leader of the Opposition has been sprung on his privatisation agenda. The people of Western Australia will know what the choice will be at the next election. One choice will be the continuation of a Labor Government, whose record on this issue is there for all to see. The Minister for Planning and Infrastructure just indicated how we returned the car fleet to public control after it had been privatised at great expense for the people. The people of Western Australia care about their public assets and public institutions. We will make sure that our public schools, hospitals, rail system and electricity system are promoted. Not only will the Labor Party promote those institutions, but also it will protect them and it will not privatise them.
