STANDING ORDER 337 - GOVERNMENT RESPONSE TO COMMITTEE REPORTS
I refer the Leader of the House to page 21 of today’s notice paper and to the heading “Government Responses”, which lists the Legislative Council committee reports that have been referred to the government under standing order 337. Standing order 337 states that a government response shall be reported to the house within four months. The list on the notice paper indicates that four reports have not been responded to after the required four months. Will the minister ensure that the government complies with standing order 337; and, if not, why not? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the honourable Leader of the Opposition for the question and for advising me earlier today that he was likely to be asking it, because that gave me the opportunity to go through the four reports for which responses are due. I acknowledge that what the Leader of the Opposition has said is correct. There are a number of reports for which a formal government response is required and is overdue. I will respond to the tenth report of the Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs within a week or two. The Minister for Health will respond to the thirteenth report of the Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs. Report No 23 of the Standing Committee on Uniform Legislation and Statutes Review will be reviewed to determine whether a response is required and whether one can be made. I am advised that both the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure and the Minister for Environment responded to the seventh report of the Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs in May 2007. Perhaps that response has not been logged as a formal response. At least one of those two ministers sent material to us today after we asked the question indicating that they have responded. I thank the honourable Leader of the Opposition for bringing the matter to our attention. We will check through each of the four reports to ensure that we meet our obligations.
