Firearms regulations—Air rifle programs
123. Mr Shane Love to the Minister for Police:
Before I ask my
question, I would like to acknowledge all the State Emergency Service volunteers,
who we are recognising on Wear Orange Wednesday.
I refer to the
decision made by the police and community youth centres to end air rifle
programs across the state, citing further regulations related to parental
supervision and complex reporting obligations rendering them no longer viable
under the new firearms laws. Will the minister agree to immediately set about
to amend the regulations to ensure that air rifle target shooting, which PCYCs
describe as bringing joy to countless families and community members over the
decades, can continue in our communities?

I thank the Leader
of the Nationals WA for the question. I understand that a range of offerings
are provided at PCYCs right across Western Australia. Not all PCYCs provide air
rifle practice. For those that do, the number of young people attending those
classes is very small. In the case of Rockingham, it might have been two. PCYCs
are individual independent bodies that make their own decisions, and some have
made a decision to no longer make the offering available. As I said earlier in
my answer to a question in this house, I think the state government is
investing $24 million in PCYCs across Western Australia. They are great
organisations. A wide range of offerings are designed to engage youth and to
put people on a good path at a young age. We will continue to support them.
