BIRTH TRAUMA — INQUIRY
811. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to the push for a WA
inquiry into birth trauma in the public hospital system and for the local
implementation of the recommendations made in the Department of Health and Aged
Care document Woman-centred care: Strategic directions for Australian
maternity services .
(1) Is the
minister aware that a select committee was established in New South Wales to
examine this issue last year?
(2) Will the
minister support a WA inquiry not controlled by the government?
(3) Has the
minister been briefed on the Strategic directions for Australian maternity
services document?
(4) If yes to
(3), will the minister table the briefing note or similar documents she
received?
(5) If no to (2),
(3) or (4), why not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following has been provided by the Minister
for Health.
(1)–(5) The Minister for Health is aware that a select
committee was established in New South Wales to examine birth trauma.
The final report of the select committee is yet to be released. The minister
and the WA Department of Health will
consider any recommendations made by the select committee insofar as they are relevant to a Western Australian
context. The document titled Women-centred care: Strategic directions for Australian maternity services is a 2019 document and predates the minister's
tenure as Minister for Health . The Cook Labor government is focused on delivering
expanded birthing choices for Western Australian women through the development of the new women's and babies'
hospital at the Murdoch site and expanded services at Osborne Park
Hospital.
