I refer to the Premier’s comments on 14 September when he indicated that the supply of power in Western Australia is primarily protected by the Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission. Given that this body has no jurisdiction in the industrial disputes that are currently threatening power supplies in Western Australia, what guarantee is the Premier prepared to give to Western Australians that their power supplies will not be cut due to industrial action this summer? Dr G.I. GALLOP

There is only one industrial relations issue in Australia today and it is called the Howard government. I live in Australia, and we do not have a working poor in Australia. Members on this side of the house will make sure that we do not get a working poor. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order! I call to order the member for Alfred Cove. I also indicate to the member for Vasse that although he now holds an elevated position, it does not mean that he can interject more than he used to. Dr G.I. GALLOP : Secondly, we will make sure that when someone seeks employment, he will not be forced to sign an Australian workplace agreement or the version that is planned by the commonwealth, which is exactly what happened in Western Australia in the past. The first thing members on this side of the house will do is to make sure that the framework for industrial relations includes everyone - employees and employers - because that is the best way to guarantee a good industrial relations system. Discussions about the relationship between Western Power and its employees are being conducted through proper processes. We are confident that a successful outcome will result from that process.
