I refer to the $64.3 million set aside for the firearm buyback scheme and I ask: (a) How many firearms have been bought back as a result of this scheme to date; (b) What is the estimated value of the firearms that have been bought back as part of this scheme; and (c) How much out of the $64.3 million amount has been expended to those who have participated in this scheme so far?

The Western Australia Police Force advise:
(a) As of 28 March 2024 – 7,407 firearms have been surrendered to the WA Police Force.
(b) The WA Police Force in consultation with Firearm Industry developed the following firearm values to be utilised during the Volunteer Buyback Scheme.
SCHEDULE OF PAYMENT FOR SURRENDERED FIREARMS
The below schedule sets out the payment being offered for each category of firearm surrendered under the Firearms Act Reform Buyback Scheme.
Please note that the year the firearm was first licensed within Western Australia, will dictate the amount that will be offered.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE
The payment for firearms surrendered under the Firearms Act Reform Buyback Scheme may take up to 6 weeks from the date of surrender. The payment will be made electronically to the nominated account details above.
The estimated value of the total number of surrendered firearms, 7,407, is not able to be accurately calculated until all surrendered firearms have undergone a quality assurance and governance process by the Buyback Team. This is to ensure no errors have been made and that firearms owners are accurately paid.
