I thank the member
for some notice of the question. I am sure this is one of very many questions
he will be sending my way. I provide him with the following answer.
(1)
The south-western snake-necked turtle is not listed as a threatened or priority
species. As the species has not been nominated for listing, its conservation
status has not been formally assessed.
(2)
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions does not typically
allocate funding on a species-by-species basis and a discrete funding value for
the conservation of snake-necked turtles cannot be provided. DBCA manages
wetland environments on lands managed under the provisions of the Conservation and Land Management Act 1984 at a
landscape scale to protect all native wetland flora and fauna, including
species such as the snake-necked turtle.
(3)
DBCA undertakes a range of actions to protect and conserve snake-neck turtles
and their habitat on lands it manages in the metropolitan area. Actions include
but are not limited to fox control, weed control, vegetation rehabilitation,
water supplementation, habitat protection, rubbish removal and community
education. DBCA has assisted with the community-led Saving Our Snake-Necked Turtle
conservation project.
