With regard to straying livestock on public highways and roads, and in reference to question on notice No. 1722, I ask: (a) how many cattle, in total and per annum, were removed or moved from the Great Northern Highway between Derby and Broome, and from the Derby Road and the Broome Road, during the last five years, and in particular: (i) how many of these cattle were dead and how many were alive; (ii) who did the cattle belong to, and where and how were they disposed of; (iii) who paid for the movement, removal and/or disposal of the cattle; (iv) how many vehicles were damaged as a result of colliding with, or trying to avoid collision with, cattle on the roads; and (v) how many people were injured as a result of colliding with, or trying to avoid collision with, cattle on the roads?

(a) Statistics were not recorded over the five year period prior to June 2013. However, 68 cattle in total were removed from Great Northern Highway between Derby and Broome, Derby Highway and Broome Highway from June 2013 to October 2014. 50 were recorded along Great Northern Highway, 18 along Derby Highway, and zero along Broome Highway.
(i) All 68 cattle were dead.
(ii) The owner of the cattle is unknown. Dead cattle are removed from the road and either buried or left to decompose outside the clear zone.
(iii) Expenses were covered by Main Roads.
(iv) 32 crashes involving cattle have been recorded during the last five years (1 January 2009 to 31 December 2013). 18 were recorded along Great Northern Highway, 12 along Derby Highway, and two along Broome Highway.
(v) Of the 32 crashes involving cattle, one resulted in a fatality and a further four required medical attention.
