MINING APPROVALS INDUSTRY WORKING GROUP
My question is about the article published in The Sunday Times on 22 March that related to the leaked report from the industry working group, which I understand was set up by the Minister for Mines and Petroleum to look at approvals processes. (1) Had the minister seen the leaked document produced by the industry working group prior to Sunday, 22 March? (2) Was the minister consulted about the industry working group activities prior to this leaked document coming to light? (3) Is the minister now involved in the industry working group in any way? Hon DONNA FARAGHER

I thank the member for his question. (1)-(3) I have not seen the particular document that was referred to in The Sunday Times . However, as the Minister for Mines and Petroleum has indicated, he set up the industry working group to gain the views of industry, which the minister was quite entitled to do. In my role as Minister for Environment, obviously a number of processes have been happening. The Environmental Protection Authority released on Monday this week its review of the environmental impact assessment process. There is also the native vegetation clearing review that is being undertaken by Garry Middle. I expect to receive that shortly. I have said that in order for me to gain the views of both industry and conservation groups, now that we have the release of the EIA review, I will set up an environmental stakeholder advisory committee, which I mentioned in response to Hon Dr Sally Talbot’s question. I will set up that committee, and it will look at the EIA review. It will also look at the native vegetation clearing review, once it is completed, as well as other issues in the portfolio relating to environmental legislation. Hon Paul Llewellyn : Were you aware of the working group — Hon DONNA FARAGHER : I am certainly aware of the industry working group that was established by the Minister for Mines and Petroleum. Hon Paul Llewellyn : — prior to 22 March? Hon DONNA FARAGHER : Yes. The PRESIDENT : Order, members! Again, if members want to debate a point, they should do it in the adjournment debate, which will be some hours hence. Hon DONNA FARAGHER : Thank you, Mr President. For clarity, the industry working group was established prior to the end of last year, so it is certainly well known that there is an industry working group.
