Alcoa—Gallium development project
932. Hon Jess Beckerling to the Leader of the House representing the Premier:
I refer to
yesterday's announcement by Alcoa about the company's gallium development
project.
(1) What date was the Premier first notified that
Alcoa was considering the gallium development at its Wagerup refinery?
(2) What is the expected lifetime of the gallium
project?
(3) What assurances has the government given
investors in the gallium plant that the Wagerup refinery and, hence, the
Willowdale mine will keep operating for the life of the gallium plant?
(4) What reassurances can the Premier provide to
the more than 59,000 Western Australians who made a submission to the Environmental
Protection Authority about Alcoa's expansion proposals that the Premier's
support for the project does not pre-empt and will not influence the EPA's
decision?

(1) It was on 2 April 2025.
(2) Alcoa is yet to provide information on the
life cycle of the proposed gallium plant, or apply for or receive approval for
its construction and operation under part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 .
(3) No assurances have been provided.
(4) The Premier maintains his previous statement
that every project in WA should be subject to the same rigorous environmental
approval system. The EPA's assessment of Alcoa's operation remains entirely
independent.
