Hon Sue Ellery interjected.
Hon NICK GOIRAN : For the
minister's benefit, it is C1509.
I refer to an article published in The
West Australian of 13 November 2019 entitled ''Two-year student sex
ban'', which refers to interstate measures aimed at preventing teachers
from grooming students for sexual relationships post-graduation. What measures
does the department have in place to prevent such grooming and abuse?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
The article the member refers to
was published in The Australian , not The West Australian . All
employees of the department are required to comply with the department's
code of conduct. A range of disciplinary sanctions are available to the
director general for breaches of the code of conduct, including dismissal from
employment. The standards and integrity directorate liaises closely with the Western
Australia Police Force and the Department of Communities'
working with children screening unit concerning child welfare–related
matters. The Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia provides
advice about relationships with former students. The department's
standards and integrity directorate will investigate any allegation that an employee
has misused his or her position to form a personal relationship with a student,
including students who are no longer enrolled.
