CONGESTION — ENHANCED SIGNALLING
154. Mrs G.J. GODFREY to the
Minister for Transport:
On behalf of the member for Wanneroo, I welcome the year 7
students from Carramar Primary School who are in the Speaker's gallery.
I understand that the Liberal–National government has
recently completed a trial to combat congestion by enhancing traffic signalling
timing on Canning Highway. Can the minister please update the house on the
outcome of this initiative and any other plans the government has for future
traffic signal optimisation that will assist my constituency of Belmont?

I thank the member for Belmont for the question and her
interest in tackling congestion for her electorate of Belmont. The member is
correct: the government has recently undertaken several initiatives to combat
congestion. One initiative that was announced recently by the former Minister
for Transport was the pilot in my electorate of Alfred Cove, and it is about
traffic light optimisation. I have pleasure in reporting that the results of
that pilot are now at hand, and it has improved traffic flow between Riseley
Street and Henley Street in Como by six minutes, with an increase of eight per
cent in traffic flow. We are now going to roll that pilot out further. I would
like to share with members today that we will be rolling it out on Orrong Road
between Leach Highway and Great Eastern Highway
Mr M.P. Murray :
What about Wellington Street?
The SPEAKER :
Member for Collie–Preston, that is a very good question—''What
about Wellington Street?''—and I call you to order for the first
time.
MR
D.C. NALDER : At this point in time I am sharing with members that we will
be rolling out two more sites, to further qualify the trial, and that will be
Orrong Road, and also Stirling Highway between Eric Street and Loch Street. We
will be rolling these out in the next month. We look forward to continued
results and success in this pilot.
Ms
M.M. Quirk interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Girrawheen, I do not need you to comment on every
single thing that is said in this chamber. I call you to order for the first
time.
MR
D.C. NALDER : Success in this pilot will see us looking to roll it out
further across the city, and I look forward to that.
In addition, the government has
responded to traffic congestion problems around Perth with a number of other
new initiatives, including the third lane on Graham Farmer Freeway, which from
all accounts, from everybody I speak to, has been extremely successful. We have
also added a third lane and widened Mitchell Freeway northbound between Hepburn
Avenue and Hodges Drive.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Cannington, I call you to order for the first time.
Member for Cockburn, I call you to order for the first time.
MR D.C. NALDER : I will
finalise by saying there is one more project around the Perth CBD. We must
ensure that Perth has a sustainable transport network to accommodate major city
projects and its growing population. That project will be delivered over four
years and introduces active traffic management that uses CCTV cameras to
provide information to road users and incident response crews. I think the
initiative is fantastic, it is going really well, and I look forward in the
next month or two to rolling it out in the City of Belmont.
