ROTTNEST
ISLAND MANAGEMENT PLAN
404. Hon LIZ BEHJAT to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Tourism:
On Monday evening, members of the Parliamentary Friends of
Tourism and Hospitality from both sides of the house attended the very
successful inaugural Rottnest Island Chamber of Commerce Inc's business
after-hours function on Rottnest Island. At the function, everyone was talking
about future plans for Rottnest Island. Could the parliamentary secretary
update the house on the state government's plans for the future of this
iconic tourist destination?
Several members
interjected.
The
PRESIDENT : Order! I have
not even called anybody yet. I will give the call to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Tourism.

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. I am sure all members in this house are very
interested to hear about Rottnest Island.
Hon Kate Doust : D id she read out what you wrote for
her?
Hon ALYSSA HAYDEN : That is so rude! I am sure the
member opposite was very interested in Rottnest Island during the debate
earlier today. First of all, Monday night was a fantastic event. I want to
congratulate the new Rottnest Island Chamber of Commerce Inc and wish it every
success.
The state government certainly has plans for Rottnest Island.
On Monday of this week, the Minister for Tourism released the draft ''Rottnest
Island Management Plan'' along with the ''Rottnest Island
Management Plan: A 20-Year Vision'' that is open for a two–month
consultation period. I am sure members opposite will be keen to put their views
and opinions on that. The draft management plan outlines a strategic direction
for Rottnest Island. It is important to note that the protection of Rottnest
Island's culture, heritage and history, and its uniqueness, are
actually the plan's major goals. This is an exciting milestone for
Western Australia's favourite holiday island destination. I table a
brief ministerial statement that was made in the other place yesterday by the
Minister for Tourism. It outlines the plans in more detail, which I am sure
everyone will be eager to read.
Several members interjected.
The PRESIDENT : Order, members! The document
referred to in the answer is tabled.
