HOUSING —
JOONDALUP BASKETBALL CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT
693. Ms
E. HAMILTON to the Minister for Lands:
I refer to the proposed development
of the former Joondalup basketball stadium, which will not only create new jobs
for the northern suburbs, but also transform the city centre. Can the minister
outline to the house how this development will deliver more aged care options
for older Western Australians?

I thank the member for Joondalup for
the question.
A few days ago, we were out there at
the old basketball centre looking at the old site and what is being proposed
for that site. It is an excellent and very exciting development. It is a $100 million
multigenerational development. It is about creating jobs and increasing density
close to the train station and the shopping centre—exactly where it
should be. It is a great project that has a number of different parts. There is
an aged-care facility and a section for residential retirement living. There
are also apartments for families. It is exactly what the Labor government is
doing. It is exactly what the McGowan government is pursuing—housing
choice in the suburbs, affordable housing in the suburbs and housing that is
close to train stations and shopping centres. It is an excellent project, and I
welcome the member for Joondalup's support for the project. I encourage
all members to look at the proposal. It is really how we need to plan our
suburbs and deliver housing across our community.
