POLICE INCIDENT — BROOME
1132. Hon KATE DOUST to the Attorney General
representing the Minister for Police:
I refer to the police shooting in Broome on Monday, 17 October.
(1) Were any police welfare officers or
similar sent to Broome to look after the welfare of the officer involved in the
incident?
(2) If not, why not?
(3) If yes to (1), when did they arrive and what assistance has been
provided?

AnswerView source ↗

On behalf of the Minister for Police, I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. I am not sure whether the police are planning to shoot
anyone on 17 October! I presume the shooting the member is referring to was the
one on 3 October.
(1) No.
(2)–(3) Local support resources were
utilised in coordination with the WA Police health and welfare branch. The
local peer support officer was recalled to duty. The WA police health and
safety psychologist spoke to each officer on the night via telephone and
followed with further regular telephone contact. Both officers have had the
support of the Kimberley district office, the Broome Police Station officer in
charge, supervisors and fellow officers. WA Police health and safety branch
continues to provide support to the officers and a psychologist will attend
Broome in the week beginning 24 October 2016.
