I refer to the Burrup Peninsula (Crown Land) Bill 2002 and motion No 7. I also refer the member to his media statement of 6 March in which he said that industry must go to Maitland. (1) Is the member aware of any environmental or heritage issues that may impede development on West Intercourse Island? (2) If so, what are they? Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE

I thank the member for his question. (1)-(2) Certainly there are significant issues that, interestingly enough, were identified by Patricia Vinnicombe, whom we mentioned earlier today. There are a number of very large middens and areas of significant carvings through the centre and also on the eastern end of West Intercourse Island. It is interesting to note that I do not support the Government’s position on the phase 2 project for West Intercourse Island, which would see three industrial areas developed on that island. However, I support the Shire of Roebourne’s Burrup-Maitland strategy, which looks at developing a small portion on the western end of West Intercourse Island as a lay-down area for Maitland and subsequently a deepwater port facility.
