(a)-(d) Outpatient services across the metropolitan area are being reviewed and reformed as part of the health reform program. The executive lead for this project is Dr Shirley Bowen. The Fremantle Hospital (FH) Pain Management Services were reviewed by Mr P Dewar and Dr S Davies, commencing in mid 2007.
The review process was completed in September 2007. While there was no formal written report, a revised model of care was developed which will markedly reduce waiting times.
(e) Reforms include the appointment of a second pain specialist and a Head of Service position, additional multidisciplinary staff, improvements to waitlist management, triaging and scheduling, and an outpatient pain management program.
(f) & (g)
The clinics are:
· Fremantle Hospital (FH) Pain Clinic
· Pain Medicine Centre, Shenton Park Campus, Royal Perth Hospital (RPH)
· Department of Pain Management, Neurosciences Clinical Service Unit, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH).
(h) (i) & (ii)
Fremantle Hospital: Wait times range from immediate to four months, depending on urgency of the case; currently 210 patients on the waitlist.
Royal Perth Hospital: Wait times range from less than one week to 14 months, depending on urgency of the case; currently 450 patients on the waitlist.
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital: Wait times range from one week to 12 months, depending on urgency of the case; currently 788 patients on the waitlist.
(i)-(k) Pain management services are accessed via referral (eg, from a general practitioner or other specialist). Patients are then assessed and managed via individual consultations and/or group work depending on their circumstances and support needs.
