(1) Has local government complained to the minister about the Government’s decision to reduce the funding of the graffiti task force? (2) What impact will the Government’s decision have on the ability of local government to maintain the battle against graffiti? Hon TOM STEPHENS

(1)-(2) I am not aware of any representations to government on this issue. Some representations from local government on this issue may have been received in my office, but they have not yet been drawn to my attention. I saw the media reports about concerns of local government on this issue. I note that the Government is consolidating a number of programs that will assist the combating of crime within the community through the Office of Crime Prevention. That office will endeavour to consolidate a range of strategies to maximise the coordinated effect of a variety of programs that so far have been spread diffusely throughout government. Through that coordinated effort, it is hoped that the graffiti issue will be picked up and run with, so that it can be included in the range of responses to assist not only local government but also the wider community in making the community safe from vandalism and criminal attacks on property, which is what graffiti is. The community should be protected from that as part of an overall strategy to make Western Australia a safer place.
