920. Hon SUE ELLERY to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Tourism:
I refer to reports of possible loose asbestos found on
Rottnest Island.
(1) When was the most recent inspection of asbestos on the
island done?
(2) Are there instances on the island of high-risk asbestos
that has been identified as easily disturbed?
(3) What is the government doing about asbestos on the island
that is at risk of being disturbed?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) It was done in August 2013 as part of the annual external
audit.
(2) Yes. The sites will have been remediated by 12 September
2014.
(3) The
Rottnest Island Authority has a continual process of asbestos risk reduction
that has substantially reduced the asbestos risk since the first report was
compiled in 2002. The Rottnest Island Authority conducts an annual external
audit to update its asbestos risk register.
