RAIL LINES
941. Hon DARREN WEST to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Transport:
(1) Does the
minister accept that under the Liberal Party's election commitment to
support commercially viable tier 3 rail lines, it was always envisaged that
government would put money into the rail lines that it considers to be viable?
(2) If no to
(1), how does the minister explain the Liberal Party commitment —
Once it is established which lines
are viable, a re-elected Liberal Government will determine what funding is
required from Government to maintain them.

government has not seen a convincing business case suggesting that tier 3 lines
are commercially viable. The government supports operations on and the
funnelling of grain to commercially viable rail lines, which by definition are
not reliant on ongoing government funding. Investment in the freight railway
network is the responsibility of Brookfield Rail and its clients.
