ASSET
SALES — GOODS AND SERVICES TAX — COMMONWEALTH PAYMENT
388. Mr M. McGOWAN to the
Premier:
I have a
supplementary question. Why did the Premier say there were no conditions attached
to this money when Mathias Cormann himself said, and I quote —
''In terms of strings attached, we would like to see more
microeconomic reform pursued by the State Government including some further
asset sales''?
Is it not more than
just coincidental?

There is no secret
that the federal government wants privatisations by every state and territory
government across a range of areas. That has been its position publicly. Joe
Hockey, as Treasurer, has had this asset recycle incentive in place, but if we
come to the actual point: was there any condition attached? No, none at all. I
made it very clear there would be no conditions.
Several members
interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr C.J. BARNETT : No conditions at all were attached. It is
probably true that some federal ministers would have liked to attach
conditions, but the Prime Minister did not require that. I made it very clear
that this was to keep our effective GST share at 38c in the dollar, which is
where it is for this year. That is all it was about. The Leader of the
Opposition is wrong again!
