Sheep—Flock numbers
1152. Hon Julie Freeman to
the Minister for Agriculture and Food:
I refer to the
Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's "Sheep and wool
industry statistics" webpage, which still lists the WA flock size as 12.4 million.
(1) Why has the flock size not been updated since
2022?
(2) Does the government hold more recent data and,
if so, will the minister table it?
(3) Given industry reports of a sharp decline in
flock numbers, is the minister concerned that the lack of up-to-date public
data may impede policymakers, producers, exporters and industry bodies from
making informed decisions?
(4) Noting that many farmers, stakeholders and
supply chain participants rely on timely data for planning, will the government
commit to reinstating regular public reporting?

Regional Development presents the official Australian Bureau of Statistics
(ABS) sheep and wool industry statistics data, which was last released in 2022.
(2) DPIRD publishes quarterly sheep industry
updates on its website, which contain the DPIRD flock modelled data.
(3)–(4) DPIRD will continue to update
