Firearms licensing—Call centre
82. Hon Nick Goiran to
the minister representing the Minister for
Police:
I refer to the
dedicated call centre that the Minister for Police has stated was established
to assist with any questions regarding the new firearms laws.
(1) If a constituent contacts the minister's office
regarding firearms licensing matters, does his staff direct them to contact
this dedicated call centre?
(2)
Is the minister aware of any complaints regarding this dedicated call centre?
(3)
Is the minister aware of any individuals who have attempted to contact this
dedicated call centre on numerous occasions, one example being at least 19
times, and to have been hung up on each time after being on hold for a few minutes?
(4)
Are there any other numbers that people can contact if they have questions
regarding the new firearms laws?

I thank the member
for some notice of the question. The Minister for Police has provided me with
the following answer.
(1)–(4)
The minister is not aware of the individual circumstances that the member has
referred to. The firearms licensing call centre averages approximately 180
calls per day, with an average call time of three minutes and 30 seconds, with
three calls being abandoned per day on average. Due to a high volume of constituent
inquiries to the Office of the Minister for Police—sorry, the wording
of this is not great, so just bear with me—some of those inquiries are
directed to contact WA police directly to have their matter dealt with. This
may be in regard to a member of the public seeking to report a crime, seeking an
update on an existing matter, or seeking to have matters clarified about their
transitional firearms licence. More information on firearms licences reform can
be found at wa.gov.au.
