ROE HIGHWAY STAGE 8 — CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT
763. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Minister for
Transport:
I refer to the minister's
comments yesterday during question time that, ''I have not read the
contract in a lot of detail'', and the Premier's admission that
the contract for Roe 8 was signed yesterday afternoon.
(1) How could the
minister allow the signing of a very contentious major road project costing
$340 million when he has not even read the contract in any detail?
(2) Now that the contract has been
signed, will the minister now release it for public scrutiny?
(3) When did the
minister find out that the contract had been signed, considering that he did
not tell the Parliament it was being signed yesterday?

I thank the Leader of the Opposition
for the question. I note there are three questions, once again.
(1) The reason
the contract was signed was that it has been 12 months. This contract could
have been signed 12 months ago. It was held up, but it is now unwound, and it
is been signed—no problem at all.
(2) I have
answered question number one, and I will now answer question number two, if the
member really wants to know the answer, although he probably does not. Will I release
the contract? I am seeking advice; I told the house that yesterday.
(3) What was
question number three?
Mr
M. McGowan interjected.
Mr W.R. MARMION : Yes, when did I find out? After the
contract was signed, I was advised last night.
